Songs To Relax To

Welcome to the new spin on “Being In Tune!” I’m calling this series “Songs To…”

Each week, I’ll be heading to social media in search of your input for your go-to songs, ones that you listen to in different situations (like, when you’re relaxing, or when you’re sitting in traffic). Give me your feedback, share your thoughts, and become an even bigger part of this musical journey. I'll give four of your picks and one of my own.

Let’s get this started!

Songs To… Relax To

Take a little mental trip with me, and imagine your perfect relaxing day. Where are you? What are you doing? What are you not doing? Who are you (or aren’t you) with?

I bet each one of you can come up with what your ideal day off would look like. But let me ask you this: When was the last time you got to truly relax? Having a tough time remembering? You’re definitely not alone!

I think I can speak for a lot of us when I say: Things. Have. Been. BUSY. Some of us work full-time, some of us have two (or more) jobs, some of us are even on that 7-days-a-week work grind (kudos, my friends, kudos). We have commitments with family and friends, and the holiday season always brings an extra level of hectic with it, too.

With such packed schedules, there’s nothing like finding some time for a little R&R. Whether it be for an hour, an afternoon or an entire day, I know we try to embrace any time we get to chill, relax, and regroup.

So, what do you like to do to relax?

For me, my perfect relaxing day includes staying at home all day in my PJs, drinking tea and having breakfast in bed, eating when I want to and maybe even watching a movie (that’s how you know I’m in relaxation mode). Relaxation time has come few and far between for me lately, juggling what feels like a hundred different things and trying to keep my head afloat. But I recently had the entire weekend off, which is something that hasn’t happened in months. At one point I had forgotten what it felt like to even have a weekend, so it was a happy and much-welcomed change of pace. I got in my perfect relaxing day, and it was totally amazing.

For those days when responsibilities take precedence over laying around in sweats, music can be an easy way to help get into a chilled out mindset, and everyone’s got their own spin on relaxing music. Here are some of your picks:

Your Picks

℗ 2016 Island Records, a division of Universal Music Operations Limited

“September Song (Acoustic)”
JP Cooper

Gritty, soulful vocals are always a hook.

℗ 2015 Numero Group

“Names and Numbers"
Express Rising

It’s all about the hazy groove with this lyric-less tune.

℗ 2015 KRUNK

“Hoppipolla”
Sigur Ros

Who even cares that they’re singing in Vonlenska?

℗ 2016 Dagmar Krug

“Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2”
Chopin

Keeping it class-y-cal.

My Pick

℗ 2016 dodie

“Sick of Losing Soulmates”
Dodie

In my eyes, relaxing music often starts with a mellow acoustic guitar. Add a soothing vocal and a simple delivery and I slowly sink deep into a cloud of tranquility. My pick for this week has all of those things. This song is new to my repertoire, but I’ve been absolutely hooked on it, and it definitely belongs on my “Indie Chill” playlist. Maybe it’ll wind up on yours, too!
