Straightening Up: Trying Out A Posture Brace

I've always had poor posture. I remember a conversation with my mother when I was about 9 or 10 years old where she warned me that I needed to improve my posture or it would cause me many worse issues in the future. As they say, many moms are, she was right. As many children do, I regret not taking her warning more seriously.

Throughout the years, I've had a shoulder injury and a back injury. Both have only been exacerbated and had their recovery prolonged due to my poor posture. I've been to multiple physical therapists who have offered me some great techniques to help, but of course, I was never consistent in practicing every day like I “should” have.

Early on in 2019, a coworker and I were conversing about having poor posture and she brought up the idea of a posture brace. She showed me pictures, I raised my eyebrows in interest, and proceeded to do nothing. You'd think my mother's words would be haunting me at this point, but nooooooo.

Fast forward to mid-summer…

I was fighting residual neck and back pain from a back injury that occurred nearly two years ago. In the beginning, I missed a day or two, or three, so I probably ended up going through the entire schedule in 35 days. The first two weeks felt great as I wore the brace, and noticed less pain in my neck. During the third week, I began noticing the points during the day when my posture was getting out of the way. By the last week and a half, I was feeling more confident in myself, as well as feeling my posture significantly improving. When I went to stretch my shoulders back, I noticed that they barely needed to move because they were already set in a pretty good position to start.

After the schedule was over, I stopped cold-turkey and was in pretty good shape for two or three days, but then I started to notice the tension coming back from not keeping my shoulders back. What I've learned is that the posture corrector did an incredible job at helping me reset my posture and having a keener sense of my posture throughout my day. However, after having poor posture for nearly all my life, old habits do die hard. Every once in awhile, I need to wear the brace for approximately half an hour to give my shoulders a reminder to stay back in position.
